What is ‘twisted musings’ about?
Twisted musings means messed up / crazy / weird thoughts and seemed like an appropriate name. It is my opportunity to draw a different (and hopefully funny) way of looking at the world.
Great, so what else can I learn about you?
I am a cartoonist based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and I have been drawing cartoons for 9 years. My toons have appeared in books, promotional posters and periodicals, including:
- 50 short cuts
- Operation Funnybone
- Frew Publication’s ‘The Phantom’#1387
Ok, so where do you your ideas come from?
A lot of cartoonists and webcomickers use this as an opportunity to provide a ’smart alec response’, but the truth (for me at least) is that my brain is trained to look for and listen out for ideas. My brain now hears a conversation or reads a word and immediately sets the scene or scenario where something may be funny. Over time, you simply get used to looking for ideas (even when you’re not trying). If the deadline is approaching and I need something (for whatever reason) flicking through old Gary Larson collections when I’m overtired is always good for three or four ideas I can’t explain it but it works every time.
What is your process for creating a cartoon?
Are all your cartoons ‘one and done’?
No, I have attempted mini stories over the past three years and some of them are listed below:
- Ninja School
- The Origin of Mungo
- Office renovations
I’m also working on creating a much larger story using some of my recurring characters.
And who are some of your recurring characters?
Wilson
It is not known how Wilson ended up on a small deserted island in the middle of nowhere, nor how long he has been there. Wilson has been visited many times yet never rescued.
Recently Wilson came across a bottle with a pen and paper inside. Like anyone in his position, he wrote a note with the slim hope it would be discovered. Perhaps he is due for some further visitors sooner than he thinks.
Billy
Billy is a little white goat who, no matter how hard he tries, always ends up in trouble (usually caused by Nails and Rusty).
Recently Billy inadvertently discovered a time/space travelling alarm clock and whilst trying to get home ‘discovered’ his ‘relative’ Mungo.
Billy has also entered ‘The Amazing Chase’ in an effort to visit some place quiet for a long, hard earned rest.
Newsreader
A newly appointed newsreader who reports all different kinds of news in a professional manner. He is extremely ambitious away from the camera and has recently launched the reality television show ‘The Amazing Chase’, which may result in bringing him more than just ratings.
Nails/Rusty
Nails and Rusty are work-for-hire contractors who will take any job, no matter how small or large. Some of their jobs have included working for the elderly, recording hit songs and kidnapping.
Recently Nails and Rusty entered ‘The Amazing Chase’ in the hope of collecting the large prize money up for grabs.
Dr Gregory House
Dr House is the brilliant, yet miserable and socially isolated doctor from Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. Easily bored (unless there is a medical mystery involved) Dr House has often been punished for skipping his rounds by doing community service.
Recently he has entered ‘The Amazing Chase’ to avoid clinic duty (but may have other reasons).
The psychologist
The psychologist is well respected, has a wide variety of patients and is able to listen to the thoughts of anyone and anything.
Recently, whilst renovating (and office less), the good doctor took up residency in Lucy Van Pelt’s psychologist booth (with disastrous results).
The ninja
The ninja, having trained for years and beaten the world’s best fighters has decided to search for a worthy student to pass on his knowledge to (with mixed results).
Recently he has been seeing the psychologist about issues with his new girlfriend.
What keeps me awake at night? A restless mind.
